The Region

Turrialba

Turrialba sits at the base of the Turrialba volcano in the Atlantic foothills of Cartago — one of the oldest coffee-growing areas in the country, with a warmer and more humid environment than Costa Rica's highland regions. The distinct terroir rewards varieties and processing approaches built for these specific conditions rather than transplanted from elsewhere. Among the first places in Costa Rica where coffee was cultivated commercially, Turrialba carries an agricultural depth that's easy to underestimate.

The Farm

Aquiares

Aquiares is one of the most respected coffee estates in Costa Rica — a large, carefully managed farm in Turrialba that the Robelo family has cultivated across generations, long before specialty coffee made origins like this worth talking about. Diego Robelo represents the current chapter of that legacy: a producer who has invested in F1 hybrid varieties and thoughtful processing while keeping the estate's long relationship with the land intact. Aquiares is a name that earns quiet respect in serious coffee circles.
