The Region
The Central Valley is where Costa Rican coffee began — the historic heart of the industry, surrounding San José on the volcanic slopes of Poás and Irazú. Coffee was first cultivated commercially here in the early 19th century, and the rich volcanic soil and moderate altitude remain as well-suited to the crop today as they were then. Two centuries of continuous cultivation show up in the farms still working this land.
