Valle Occidental · Costa Rica
raspberry | guanabana | black cherry
The Region
The West Valley sits northwest of San José, covering the highlands around Naranjo, Palmares, and San Ramón at elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 meters. Cooler and drier than the Central Valley to the east, with well-defined seasons that push the coffee tree toward careful, concentrated fruit development. Serious producers have been building their farms here quietly for generations.
The Farm
Alejo Castro farms on the slopes of Poás — one of the most active volcanoes in Central America — where the soil is as mineral-rich as anywhere in the country. The elevation brings cool nights that slow ripening and build the clarity the West Valley is known for. It's a dramatic piece of land to grow coffee on, and it shows in the result.
